Glycolic Acid

Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Glycolic acid encourages the shedding of dead skin sitting on top of skin surface. This helps skin look more radiant and more luminous. As an exfoliator it helps improve texture making the skin more smooth and even toned. Glycolic acid has also been shown to help reduce the appearance of fine lines as it buffs away dead skin cells revealing fresher and more luminous skin.

.

Glycolic acid is a wonderful ingredient for acne prone as it works in two ways. Firstly it’s great to help in loosening up dead skin cells sitting on the surface clogging our pores. Secondly it’s small enough to penetrate into our pores loosening up any sebum build up that could lead to breakouts and blackheads. By penetrating into our pores and cleaning them out, the perceived visibility of enlarged pores is diminished. [The size of our pores can never be truly reduced, however we can reduce the pronouncement of oxidised sebum which turns colour and highlights our pores.]

Hyaluronic Acid

Humectant

As hyaluronic acid naturally occurs within bodies it would making it less likely to cause irritation. Hyaluronic Acid works to heal the skin after damage caused by UV rays and free radicals. The addition of Hyaluronic acid in our skincare results in our skin looking younger and plumper as it smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles. Restores skins moisture and leaves skin feeling more supple and soft.

.

Hyaluronic acid works by drawing moisture to itself subsequently drawing moisture to the surface of our skin. As hyaluronic acid is a large molecule it cannot penetrate the skin so it holds the moisture so our skin can absorb it. Another way to get hyaluronic acid to penetrate our skin is to change it into a smaller molecule. This is where sodium hyaluronate comes into play. It’s the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid and allows for deeper penetration. Sodium hyaluronate is a great antioxidant that helps heal the skin as it has anti inflammatory properties and promotes a healthy skin barrier.

L-Ascorbic Acid

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a common ingredient used to treat hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when certain areas of the skin are darker than the surrounding skin, resulting in darker patches of the skin. This happens when more melanin is produced in these areas giving the skin a darker appearance.Vitamin C comes in a number of different forms.

.

Vitamin C supports the synthesis of collagen production. With a depleting bank of vitamin c the production of collagen will get slower and the signs of ageing will be prevalent in finer wrinkles. This is why vitamin C is a powerhouse ingredient in supporting. Vitamin C not only works to fade hyperpigmentation but for dark spots and some scaring. Vitamin C works by inhibiting the melanin pigment pathway. This just means that it reduces the over production of melanin without altering the skin’s pigmentation.

Lactic Acid

Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Lactic acid has been used in skincare for 1000s of years as Cleopatra would bathe in milk to keep her skin smooth and soft. Not only does it gently slough dead skin off the surface lactic acid is great moisturiser leaving skin feeling well hydrated and looking more plumper, younger and radiant. Lactic acid has shown to promote cellular turnover resulting in less wrinkles and fine lines as well as firmer looking skin.

.

Milder exfoliant as it’s a significantly larger molecule than glycolic acid so it works more on the surface of the skin as it cannot penetrate as far into the skin. As it is less potent, lactic acid is recommended for new users to AHAs and anyone who finds other AHAs more irritating. Lactic acid is great for those trying to combat blemished skin as the gentle exfoliating properties will not aggravate the already irritated skin.

Salicylic Acid

Beta Hydroxy Acid

Salicylic acid is a chemical exfoliant like its counterpart glycolic acid, the main difference being salicylic acid is a larger oil soluble molecule. Similarly, salicylic acid loosens dead skin to resurface newer fresher skin. The benefit of having an oil soluble molecule is that salicylic acid works deeper and can penetrate more easily to loosen sebum and oil congested pores.

.

Salicylic acid is not only useful for acne or blemished skin. As an exfoliant salicylic acid works to gently buff dull and rough skin to unveil a healthy, brighter and radiant complexion. Similarly to AHAs salicylic acid promotes collagen production and skin elasticity to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Initial use can cause tingling to the skin which should not be too uncomfortable and your skin will adjust to it. However, burning sensation should be differentiated and not ignored, the product should be stopped immediately. Overuse of salicylic acid can be counterproductive as it can irritate and dry out the skin, making . Salicylic acid should not be mixed with vitamin a as it may aggravate the skin and dry it out too much. Make sure sunscreen is applied to skin after salicylic acid application.

Sodium PCA

Sodium Pyroglutamic Acid

Great skin identical humectant that naturally occurs in our skin. Sodium PCA is the salt form of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, known also as pyroglutamic acid or proline (amino acid). Sodium PCA makes up about 12% of our skin’s NMF

.

Humectants work by drawing in moisture and holding it. Sodium PCA will draw moisture from the atmosphere and Be mindful of the humidity factor where you live as this can affect the efficacy of humectants. Humectants work by drawing moisture from areas that have less water - if you live in a particularly dry weather, your humectant could work by drawing water from deep within your skin.
